My Writing Process
What am I working on?
I have almost finished my second book, which will submitted next week to my editor.
How does my story differ from others of its genre?
Over the last seven years, as I've chased my dream of publication, one bit of advice has stuck. To write my story. By using my voice and telling the story my way is how it differs.
Why do I write?
This is a question I asked myself after my last rejection. And the answer - I write because I have to. I can't imagine a life where I don't write and how else am I going to deal with those characters who fill my head, clamouring to tell me their story?
How does my writing process work?
I have always had to fit writing in around a family and life on a busy farm. Basically I write when I can. I'd prefer to write first thing in the morning, but will always grasp every opportunity. I'm also lucky that I have a lovely room in which to write. Often I have the company of my dog, Tara.

Beginnings and Endings
Today I will be working on the final chapter of my first draft and I am looking forward to writing 'the end'. Of course it's not the end. It's really only just the beginning, because next it will be time to read through the story, edit and polish.
But first I will take a break, step back from the story and as it's Shrove Tuesday what better way to start than a few pancakes? That of course gives me a new dilemma. What topping?

Valentines' Day
It's Valentine's Day. A day of hearts and flowers and a day for love and romance.
It's also my birthday! So what better day to share the fabulous new title for my first book.
My So You Think You Can Write entry, Behind the Scandalous Façade, which sold just three weeks ago to Harlequin Mills and Boon now has a sparkling new title.
The only thing left to say, is that I wish you all a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Getting 'The Call'
I've wanted to make this post for so long, but finally I can say .... I got 'The Call' I am now a Harlequin Mills and Boon author!
It's a moment I've dreamt of for many years and one I've worked hard towards too, stubbornly never giving up.
I received revision for my So You Think You Can Write entry just before Christmas and submitted the revisions early in the New Year, then crossed just about everything I could.
On Thursday last week I travelled to Aberystwyth to meet a writing friend for lunch. A cold winter wind was funnelling off the sea and down the street. So when my phone rang I hid in the doorway of a closed shop to shelter from the wind and it's there I received the momentous news that I had sold my first book to Harlequin Mills and Boon. Not only that, I was offered a two book contract.
When I met with Kate, my writing friend we were both so excited we could hardly order lunch and it was so nice to be able to share that moment with someone who is also hoping for such a call.
By the time I returned home, my phone needed charging and I had so many messages I could hardly keep up. Naturally, later that evening I popped the cork on a bottle of champagne I'd discovered lurking in the back of the cupboard over Christmas. Sleep that night was practically impossible as I floated around on cloud nine.
It's been a wonderful journey but finally I have reached my destination. Now I have a brand new journey to embark on, that of a Harlequin Presents author!!!

The Final Three
After what seemed like weeks living off the adrenalin of So You Think You Can Write, the winner was announced this week. I'd waited by the phone - just in case. I'd be a liar if I didn't admit to that!
The winner was Tanya Wright with her entry, If Only and I think it might be a good idea to grab a box of tissues before clicking on this link!
As for my entry, well I've still got my fingers crossed that an editor will like my story and want to work with me.
During the last few weeks life took on a surreal feel. I attended the RNA Winter Party, met with editors and authors from Mills and Boon, who all seemed excited by my Top 10 entry. Which leaves me with hope!
I also did something that has been on my wish list for a long time. I went on the London Eye, which was almost dreamlike again, as it was a guided trip with just two other people. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time!

Shattering the Silence
Have you ever had to keep a secret you were just bursting to shout about? It's hard, let me tell you.
At the beginning of last week I got a telephone call to say that my entry into So You Think You Can Write competition had been selected as a Top 10 finalist. I was just about stunned into silence at that point, but to be told to keep it a secret for a week, until the announcement was made on the website, was torture.
I tried so hard to get on with normal life and working on my latest story but I just couldn't settle to anything, not with a secret like that bubbling away inside!
Then finally it was the day, which meant keeping the secret a bit longer until the beginning of the day in New York when the website was updated. Once that was done it was time to tell everyone and anyone.
I have been assigned an author mentor, Maisey Yates, who will be reading my book and helping me to promote it. Also Laura McCallen, a Presents editor is championing my book too and you can find her on the 50 Editors page of the website.
I have worked hard towards the dream of becoming a Harlequin Mills and Boon Presents author, attending courses with Kate Walker here in the Wales, organised by Writers' Holiday and with Sharon Kendrick in Italy, organised by The Watermill.
I have met some fantastic people and made wonderful friendships through my writing and would love to push that dream to the limit and become published through this competition. Brainstorming Weekend
On the first day of November I left for a weekend of writing with two writing friends. We have found a lovely holiday cottage in the heart of the Welsh countryside. Once we'd arrived and stocked up the cupboards with delicious food and of course bottles of wine, we lit the fire and got started. We read over our work in progress and offered feedback, ideas to improve and even brainstormed new stories, depending on what stage we were at with our stories.
Over the course of the weekend, when it wasn't raining, we headed out for a walk. Often talking over our stories as we enjoyed the beautiful views. This is one such view from our Sunday morning walk. Stunning, isn't it?
As it was also the start of NaNo, which I signed up for at the last minute, I thought it would be a good boost and help me on my way to the target of 50,000 words in a month. I have to confess to being just a bit behind, but I am writing. It should also keep me busy this month!
